Once again this is less of a hack than documenting the installation of
a product. In this case it's a Porsche Convertible Car Seat (PNA-986-025-01). There
are two models made, one a regular good up to 20lbs and a convertible
good up to 40lbs. Since my baby was about 18lbs when I had it installed
I spent the extra few $$$ for the seat that I would get more life from.
First some background. I seriously considered trading my Boxster in
for a more appropriate car but I eventually decided just to keep the car
and get an appropriate car seat for the car. In this case I decided on
the Porsche car seat only because it's the only way to get the airbag
deactivation device installed. This is the ONLY safe way to have a baby
seat in the front of the car. Porsche would not sell me the deactivation
device separately, I had to buy a seat with the device. The installation
of the device was free.
Overall I'm happy with the product. The car is is actually just a
Britax Roundabout car seat with the addition of a buckle that plugs
into the airbag deactivation device, different color fabric and of course
a tiny PORSCHE logo. This car seat sell for about $230
in stores,
not
cheap compared to other brands, but Porsche still has a decent mark-up
on their seat.

My husband has a 2001 Carrera with the 996 body style. I have the Britax Companion car seat and he is able to get the seat in the backseat no problem, we just orderd the extra base to make it easier so we just have to click it in and out. Britax is the company that makes the Porsche car seat.

We bought the deactivation kit from Porsche on the understanding (from them) that any seat belt buckle could be used to plug into it and deactivate the airbag, thereby allowing you to use any baby car seat safely. Only after we had had this installed and bought our travel system did we discovered that it is a Porsche baby seat specific seat belt buckle - which they will not sell as a separate - even though it was their mis-information. In the end we got a car seat from them and cut the buckle off, so that we could deactivate the air bag and use our travel system - they absolutely do not recommend this.

I just looked into the carseat/deactivation bar. It comes together in a kit for $646 at my local Porsche dealer. I have a feeling that you can use any car seat but need the deactivation (of the air bag) bar/device and it is only sold as a kit together.

We have a baby on the way in about 2 months
I have an offer to get the car seat and deactivation bar for the 20-40lb seat, and I'm wondering if the deactivation bar will work with other regular (i.e. non Porsche) baby seats (e.g. Graco)? I would then use the Porsche seat when he gets old enough.
Any advice appreciated

Don't be daft. Look at the pictures and spot the DEACTIVATION bar...it's not there to deactivate the toddler! Why would someone who adds stabiliser latches forget about the airbag? Sorry but these self-righteous comments, even with a friendly glue over it, get to me.

Hi there - that is a good car seat. PLEASE tell me that the passenger-side airbag has been deactivated. It can be fatal for the child if it ever deploys while the child is in the seat. There was no comment about that, so I just wanted you to be aware. Good pictures, by the way. Nice work on the website.
