Miami Seaquarium

I haven't visited the Miami Seaquarium in a while so when the kids were bored and we needed a new place to visit we went to the Seaquarium. At the ticket counter they had a sign that a couple shows were closed for renovation. I guess that's a good thing, they definitely needed it. There was still plenty to see.

The shows were pretty good. They are far more amateurish than the much more polished SeaWorld. The Sea Lion show was ok for the little kids but a little rough on the adults in the audience. The Killer Whale/Dolphin show had a more broad appeal.

Otherwise some of the exhibits were decent and others were quite poor. Most notably the Manatee exhibit really needs some serious work. They sit in an obviously old pool where you can watch them from above or through very scratched and dirty windows on the sides.

I grew up in Miami in the 1960's and remember many fun times at Miami Seaquarium I learned a lot about the various animals and respect for preserving these animals for generations yet unborn. It is a great place to go and learn about aniumals and their envirnment. A MUST SEE!!

Lolita the killer whale at the Miami Seaquarium has lived there nearly 40 years! Her tank is only one and a half times her body's length. She is 22 ft long and the tank is 20 ft deep in the front of the platform and 12 ft deep in the back. Lolita has no shade to protect her from the blazing sun and is forced to perform with only a tiny dolphin as company. Poor Lolita. I hope one day she is released into the wild again or even taken to a better marine park...
