Diving St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

The night before we were having dinner and discussing options for what to do in St. Thomas. Once again nothing seemed appealing so Lily and I decided to go diving again. Good thing too because until we signed up they didn't have enough people to do the trip. There were only five divers on the large pontoon boat.

We met a rep from the dive shop just off the ship and we walked to the end of the pier to a room full of gear where we picked out wetsuits. We then walked to the smaller pier to meet the dive boat and we were on our way. On our way out we all drooled over Larry Ellison's enormous private yacht named Rising Sun. The yacht was nearly half the length of our cruise ship so that gives you a little perspective on just how huge that PRIVATE yacht is.

The first dive site was a very short ride from the harbor. We arrived at Spratt Point which is a nice coral with lots of valleys to swim through and very healthy coral. Unfortunately the divemaster swam so fast that we had trouble keeping up in our crappy rental fins. At one point they all swam past a Spotted Moray Eel that was almost completely out in the open. I prefer to go slow and look for the little things.

The second dive was at a site on the other side of the harbor called Navy Barges. We dove two of the barges which were sunk after World War II and are somewhat broken up. They still had decent swimthroughs and a lot of coral growth.

You can read more about the dives in my dive log for Dive 233 and Dive 234.
